• Sun City

Week long vacations rarely feel long enough? Naturally, this is exactly what I thought after a mini break when the return flight from Johannesburg touched down in Cape Town. It did however feel as though I’d been away for months. I think that’s the sign of a good holiday?

The week was spent relaxing in Sun City.

If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it. It’s a must for South Africans – even more so for South Africans with children. Of course, this is only relevant if you enjoy spending time in the Sun.

The highlight of the week had to be our encounter with the Elephants.

We set off at 6 am on a self drive through the Bakubung Reserve – part of the Pilanesberg and only 5 minutes from Sun City. It wasn’t long before we found ourselves parked between three herds of elephants. They were amazing. They were also divided in groups and needed to cross the very road we were parked on. I stopped breathing for a minute while one of the bulls eyed us out from a meter away, trying to decide if he’d leave us be or tip the car. He walked slowly towards us and then walked around the car.  Awesome.

I didn’t think we’d possibly get any closer to these amazing creatures and then two days later we were lucky enough to visit the Letsatsing Private Reserve and come face to face with these beautiful animals. It was an incredible experience. So, So, So fortunate.

Apart from the Game drives and wildlife, there really is plenty on offer at this holiday destination. Steep prices for food and drinks aside, it’s a top notch resort which will keep you entertained.

There is a local shabeen with a fairly adventurous menu. If it tickles your fancy, the Sun City Hotel offers entertainment in the Casino [Gamble with your head and not your heart] as well as the Sun City Extravaganza nightly show. The Valley of the Waves guarantees some fun – Leave your surfboard and shark repellent at home. Instead, enjoy a steady flow of waves and if you’re up for it, the water slides and aptly names Temple of Courage, await.

There are buses that run up and down the resort 24 hours a day – Hop on and visit any one of the many pools the hotels have to offer. A day at the Cascades Hotel pool – It doesn’t really get too much better than that….. Unless, you’re lucky enough to find your way into the Palace. (Inbox me for details)

As I said, a week just isnt long enough – I didn’t even make it to parasailing or jet ski’ing at Waterworld… and there was talk of the zip line which never quite happened and a visit to the crocodile farm. Hmmm… 2016 perhaps… When there’s a week free ;)

There are plenty of photographs - The wildlife was amazing and the detail that went into the creation of Sun City is unbelievable... It has to be seen.   Some pics were taken witha Nikon D7000, Some with a Kodak point and shoot and others with a Kodak underwater camera :)
